Newspapers in Education

Welcome to our Newspapers in Education Programme (NiE)

What is NiE?

Newspapers in Education (NiE) consists of educational pages published weekly through-out the school year, in APN

News and Media’s 14 daily papers, from Coffs Harbour to Mackay. The pages target the middle school, years 4 to 9, and are a platform that launches children into research, whilst encouraging curiosity and investigation. NiE hopes to initiate discussion on important current affairs and curriculum linked topics, that challenge students of every level.

NiE is about expanding awareness through reading the local newspaper.

It is a partnership between the local newspaper, local businesses and local schools, that offers our youth the opportunity to create a better tomorrow, through challenging their thoughts and opinions, extending their literacy capabilities and providing them with life skills.

The content of the NiE pages is designed to encourage students and readers to investigate and research additional information through multi-media channels. The program also supplies resources for in-classroom activities, that support the NiE pages.

How to Use NiE

Step 1

On your NiE day, grab the copies of the local newspaper delivered to your school and use the NiE page to develop literacy skills in your classroom.

Step 2

Involve students in discussions about the topic and encourage them to read and respond to the news. The NiEpage contains activities that engage students in exploring the newspaper and becoming more familiar with its contents.

Step 3

Access the Task Cards from this website that support the topic page. You may wish to copy them and use them in literacy group work, to extend the student’s understanding of the topic.
