Abbott promises $4 billion for roads

FEDERAL Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has promised $4 billion for major road projects in three capital cities if he wins the next election.

Speaking at the national Liberal Party conference in Melbourne, Mr Abbott also vowed to abolish the carbon tax if he wins government.

But Prime Minister Julia Gillard has slammed the funding vow as a "mythical promise" with no costing sheet.

She has also restated her belief in the carbon tax as an "important reform".

Mr Abbott says the roads funding commitment would help to ease traffic congestion in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

He says $1.5 billion will go towards Melbourne's East West link to help ease traffic congestion.
