ORPHANED two-year-old elephant Bona is well on her way to recovery less than six months after one Hervey Bay woman and two other Queenslanders started the race to save her life.

Amanda French will fly back to Sumatra for the second time next month to help with feeding and ongoing care for the lactose-intolerant young elephant.

Bona became national news last month after Ms French, photographer Bruce Levick and Murray Munro created Save Bona, a website to raise enough funds to keep Bona alive and in care at the Seblat Elephant Conservation Centre.

The team has less than $10,000 left to raise of the $24,000 needed to cover 12 months of formula, supplements and other supplies for the little elephant thanks to a rush of support from around the world.

Bona needs 45kg of formula each month at a cost of about $2000 each month.

She was rescued in early 2011 from a palm oil plantation where seven adult elephants were found poisoned.

It is believed Bona's mother was among the poisoned adults.

Ms French, who spends much of her time fighting for whales as one of the Paddle Out 4 Whales organisers, said she could not wait to go back to Sumatra.
