Case dropped against David Hicks

A CASE against former Guantanamo Bay detainee David Hicks, aiming to block profits from his book as proceeds of crime, was dropped on Tuesday.

After more than five years in prison, Mr Hicks admitted to a United States Military Commission that he provided material support for terrorism, and was extradited to South Australia's Yatala Prison in 2007.

Mr Hicks wrote a book about his experiences in Guantanamo Bay, profits of which went to a family trust.

After an Australian Federal Police investigation, the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions took legal action against Mr Hicks in July last year on the grounds that profits from his book were proceeds of a crime.

The DPP action was officially dropped on Monday, with the Supreme Court ending proceeding on Tuesday.
In a statement released on Tuesday (july 24), the DPP said the legal action should not continue.

Mr Hicks told reporters outside the court that the outcome had shown the DPP had no evidence to show he had committed a crime.
