China claims first gold medal

CHINA'S Yi Siling has shot her way to the first gold medal of the London Olympics after claiming top spot in the 10-metre air rifle at Royal Artillery Barracks.

The favourite heading into the event, Yi was a marvel of consistency, heading off the challenges of silver-placed Sylwia Bogacka and bronze medalist Yu Dan.

Bogacka was a constant threat throughout the event, but a horror eighth round saw her drop to fourth and hand Yi the gold medal.

But the Polish shooter landed a near perfect score on her final shot, putting herself ahead of China's Yu and defending champion Katerina Emmons in fourth.
