COOLANGATTA has come in at number three in the list of best Aussie beaches by leading travel website TripAdvisor.

Gold Coast beaches dominated the 2012 awards with Burleigh Heads rated number one and Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise also listed in the top 10.

Gold Coast City Council economic development and tourism committee chair and councillor Susie Douglas said the rankings wouldn't come as a surprise to locals.

"This simply reaffirms what 11 million visitors to the Gold Coast every year already know, that we have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world," Cr Douglas said.

Southern Gold Coast Chamber president and Cooly Rocks On chair Gail O'Neill said the award came on the back of hard work by Connecting Southern Gold Coast and the council to support events at Coolangatta.

"That's the aim of our events and festivals, to up the profile of the area," Ms O'Neill said.

"It's fantastic and it's inevitable, people just flock to the beaches here."

Comments on the Trip Advisor website mentioned the safe swimming, clean sand, landscaped esplanades, playgrounds, barbecues and headlands along the Gold Coast.
