BETTY and Tony of Roma are the lucky winners of the latest Mater Prize Home draw, winning a home in Mount Coolum valued at $1,081,656, as well as a book buyer prize of $35,000 in gold bullion.

When told she was the new owner of a million dollar home, Betty's first response was "you're joking".

She could not wait to tell her husband when he returned home.

Later that afternoon, her husband had the same reaction and called Mater Lotteries marketing manager Jodie Springer to confirm it was in fact not a practical joke played on them by a friend.

Betty is a long-time supporter of Mater Prize Home and has been purchasing tickets since before her 50 year old son was born; she remembers visiting the homes on trips to Brisbane.

Betty was blown away when she received the life changing phone call.

"Thank you very much, I can't believe it. I never thought we would win," she said.

Betty was still in shock when she was given the keys to their brand new home.

"I support charities who work with children as my brother has a special needs child. It never crossed my mind that we would win one day."

The couple are excited about winning the Mater Prize Home as it is so close to the beach and they will be able to walk their 14-year-old dog, Herbie.

The couple will have their friends and family up to visit, including their electrician of 25 years who was working in their shed at the time of the phone call.

Proceeds from Mater Prize Home Lotteries help to purchase specialist equipment and fund vital research to improve health care for babies and children at Mater.

Mater Foundation executive director Nigel Harris said he encouraged people to support the Mater Prize Home Lottery by buying a ticket or becoming a regular buyer by joining the VIP program.

"Since the Mater Prize Home Lottery started we have had hundreds of lucky winners like Betty and Tony who also hope to make a difference. Thanks to everyone who buys a lottery ticket which supports patient care and medical research to ensure our babies and children have the best possible chance of a healthy future," said Nigel.
