A SOUTH Grafton man has suffered life-threatening injuries in a head-on collision between a car and a truck at Dirty Creek.

Emergency services were called out to the Pacific Hwy just south of Dirty Creek Rd about 3.30am Friday, after a Holden Cruze travelling north veered on to the wrong side of the road and collided with a B-double travelling south.

A second B-double following behind tried to swerve to miss the crash, but hit the first truck's rear trailer, causing it to jack-knife and block off both lanes.

The 24-year-old driver and sole occupant of the Holden Cruze suffered multiple trauma injuries and was airlifted to Coffs Harbour Hospital, where he was in a serious but stable condition at 4pm yesterday.

Soon after he was airlifted to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital.

Traffic was diverted via Orara Way for hours as emergency crews worked to clear the debris and a significant amount of diesel, which was spilt across both lanes of the highway.

The highway reopened about 11am.

Both truck drivers escaped injury, but were taken to Grafton District Hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

Police said an investigation had been launched to determine the cause of and circumstances leading up to the crash.
