IF it wasn't for the new payWave technology another one of the major crime categories would have fallen in the region, according to Coffs Clarence Police Command Crime Manager Detective Inspector Darren Jameson.

Insp Jameson said his command was largely in line with the rest of the state when the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) released its figures for the year up to June.

"There's been an increase in crimes of fraud (206 last year compared to 138 in 2012-13) due almost exclusively to credit card fraud and particularly payWave transactions," he said.

BOCSAR dismissed the difference as not significant, but Insp Jameson said there were issues with the payWave technology.

"It's based on ease of use, but there's no inbuilt security functions," he said.

Insp Jameson said the drop in drug and alcohol-related crimes was pleasing, but said it would continue.

"It's a cultural thing. People's tolerance and acceptance of excessive alcohol consumption and drug use has an impact on crime," he said.

He said the command's policing of the drug trade would build on the $11 million worth of drugs his officers seized in the first quarter of 2014.

Insp Jameson said strong enforcement of liquor licensing legislation will continue.

"We will continue our strategy of personal responsibility and strong enforcement," he said.

"We will take action against publicans breaking the conditions of their licence, as well as individuals who are unable to maintain their self decorum. We collected $157,000 in on-the-spot fines until the end of the financial year."

Insp Jameson said the only major increase in the figures - a jump in the number of steal from dwelling offences - appeared to be an anomaly.

He said the BOCSAR figures reflected the strength of policing in the command and success of crime-fighting strategies.
