Defeat a wake up call, says Osieck

SOCCEROOS coach Holger Osieck says defeat by Scotland might prove to be a good thing ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifiers to come.

The German was not happy with the team's performance in the 3-1 defeat in Edinburgh, but said it could just be the kick up the backside his players needed.

"I consider it a wake-up call and we have to improve a lot in order to be ready for the upcoming qualifiers," Osieck said. "It's never good to lose but maybe it's come at the right time."

Yesterday morning's defeat means the Socceroos have not won in four internationals' - their worst run since 2000.

"Our display today was very, very... basic, let's call it that," Osieck said after the match.

"Even during half-time when we talked about it we didn't actually change.

"I don't know the reason but the bottom line is we played very poorly today."

Scotland's goals came from Jordan Rhodes in the first half, an unfortunate own goal from debutant Jason Davidson and a third from Ross McCormack, both in the second half.
