Assault charge after pub diner prodded with fork

AS ALEX Jankowski stabbed his fork and knife into his chicken schnitzel at a South Grafton hotel on Christmas Eve, he found someone else had a similar idea with his neck.

"I was sitting there and he leaned into me with the knife," Mr Jankowski said.

Mr Jankowski said he pulled away when he felt something sharp pressing on his neck, but the man stuck a knife or fork into him again.

"I was shocked. It was absolutely out of the blue," he said.

"In a situation like that you don't have time to think, you just react."

Hotel staff also reacted quickly and wrestled his attacker to the ground.

Mr Jankowski said as soon as the man entered the hotel, the atmosphere changed.

"He was loud and overbearing. The way he talked to the waitress," Mr Jankowski said.

Mr Jankowski said he wanted to report the incident in case the man did it again.

"If he has any brains, after being arrested he won't do it again," he said.

Coffs Clarence police inspector Tony Milner said an intoxicated 38-year-old South Grafton man allegedly pressed a fork into a 72-year-old Grafton man's neck in the bistro area of a hotel at 1.30pm on Christmas Eve.

Police charged him with assault.
