Education union declares 'Gonski Day'

THE education union has called on politicians of all persuasions to back the recommendations of the Gonski Review of school funding, declaring today 'Gonski Day'.

Businessman David Gonski's wide-ranging recommendations for a $5 billion school funding reform were handed to the government in December last year.

While Education Minister Peter Garrett released an initial response to the Gonski Report earlier this year, no action has been taken yet.

Australian Education Union federal president Angelo Gavrielatos has been pushing for a commitment to the recommendations.

"The Gonski Review makes it clear too many children are being denied the resources and opportunities they need due to the broken funding system," he said.

The AEU has been running a media campaign in recent months, 'I Give a Gonski'.

While the campaign was endorsed by independent federal MPs the Greens and the Queensland, New South Wales and Victorian governments, not all states were willing to contribute financially to the reform.

Mr Gavrielatos said it was time for action, calling on all politicians to work together to push the reforms through.

"Our children shouldn't be denied the resources that will make such a difference to their education," he said.

"They should have first call on the budget, not be asked to wait in line."

A spokeswoman for Mr Garrett said the government was already finalising an official response to the review.

But she said until that was released, it was too early to talk about a final dollar figure or what a new funding model would look like.

In rare agreement with Mr Gavrielatos, she said the states also had to play their role in funding any reforms as well as the Commonwealth.
