Barnard's focused on target

AS she prepared for a major Games tune-up on the Sunshine Coast today, London-bound sharpshooter Elisa Barnard said yesterday that she had not been distracted by allegations her father stalked and harassed an Olympic rival.

Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court dismissed a case against Jon Barnard last week.

He was accused of intimidating Odette Snazelle during Olympic qualifying events earlier this year.

Barnard recently linked with Coast-based coach Lynette Rankin-Tyack, the mother of prominent local archer Ryan Tyack, making the region her new training base.

The Sydney-born athlete, 19, will be Australia's sole woman's archer in London.

Barnard said she was determined not to let the controversy surrounding her father distract her as she zeroed in on her dream of winning an Olympic medal.

"It only cut into my training schedule for a couple of days at the court. I can easily put it behind me," she said.

Barnard said her form was good enough for her to medal in London and she would rely heavily on Rankin-Tyack's advice while at the Games.

"Lynette won't be going to London, unfortunately, but I'll be taking my laptop over, so we can get to Skype," she said.

Rankin-Tyack said the intimidation controversy had made Barnard mentally stronger.

"If anything, the issue has been a positive," she said. "It's required her to have strength.

"Elisa has developed a very focused mind strength. It's a matter of stronger athlete, stronger person."

Rankin-Tyack said the friendship between Barnard and her son, who failed to make the Olympic team at the last hurdle, had helped Barnard with her strategy in the lead-up to the Games, but changes needed to be made given her son's failure to make the team.

"She had been quite reliant on Ryan's technical knowledge," Rankin-Tyack said.

"We've started to make her self-sufficient."

Barnard will go head to head with Tyack at Sunshine Coast Archery Club from 1pm today.

Rankin-Tyack wants the public to show up so an Olympic-style atmosphere can be created.
