A FREE six-week program for children and adults struggling with school, work or family dynamics is being offered by the Australian Equine Therapy Centre at Possum Creek.

The program uses horses and ponies to assist in the treatment of low self-esteem, anxiety, lack of confidence, hyperactive behaviour and post-trauma symptoms for children and adults.

Owned and operated by registered psychologists, the centre's free program, which starts on October 19 and runs every Friday and Saturday for six weeks, allows individuals to experience the centre's equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) program.

"The program allows individuals to have control over the horse and find a confidence within themselves they may have otherwise thought lost," psychologist and centre owner David Godden said.

"They are able to form a relationship with the horse based on mutual respect of the other's boundaries, effective communication and co-operation.

"Riding, experimental learning, grooming and groundwork promote the benefits of social, physical and often emotional interactions with another being, increasing confidence and self-esteem."

Mr Godden said the program was not focused on one's problem behaviour, but rather the focus was transferred to the individual's competency and creativity, building self-esteem.

After each equine session the individual is engaged in a one-on-one therapy session. For more information, phone Trudy 0457 888 890.
