Google, YouTube among the pranksters this April Fools' Day

TALK show queen Ellen DeGeneres moving to Gladstone with wife Portia De Rossi?

The previously unheard of Australian Bureau of Motorways announcing lane restrictions nationally with special right-hand lanes for "the exclusive use of BMW vehicles"?

YouTube announcing its eight-year-old site was simply a contest to find the world's best video and would now close for 10 years to pick a winner?

Anyone smell a rat?

Many did, but there were plenty on social media who fell for 2013's stellar April Fools' Day jokes.

It's hard to imagine anyone actually sniffing electronic devices after Google announced its "nose" function but there is no doubt some did.

They even clicked on the "help" button to be told technological constraints meant not all smells were compatible with all devices.

It also told them to refrain from licking or biting your screen before noting the date - April 1.

The jokes extended to media too with Twitter abuzz about mining mogul Gina Rinehart now running Channel 10 and the Biggest Loser cancelled after a contestant had a heart attack.

Mackay Regional Council asked people to freeze their water to see what levels of fluoride were reaching which suburbs as it recovered from its "fluorigate scandal".

Residents were told if the water did not solidify within two hours, that was a sign the levels were too high in those areas. Concerned residents were asked to phone 1800 Fluoride.

Meanwhile, a source close to DeGeneres was quoted as saying the A-list couple had inspected a property at Riverstone Rise at Tannum Sands and planned to continue filming her show from the Marina Main Stage.

"I think the Gladstone region can expect quite a bit of attention in the upcoming months as Ellen and her entourage prepare to roll into town," the source said.

Google also launched its Simple Complete House Makeover Internet Conversion Kit - or SCHMICK for short - to let people give their house a lick of paint or mow the nature strip for free on Google Street View.

The search engine giant also added the treasure maps feature, complete with 2D hand-drawn landmarks and hidden treasure chests.
