Car fire may have been deliberately lit

POLICE are investigating the circumstances surrounding a suspicious car fire in Grafton overnight.

Fire crews and police were called to attend the blaze on the corner of North and Turf St about 11.50pm last night.

Grafton Fire and Rescue captain Garry Reardon said the vehicle, a silver Mitsubishi Lancer, was well alight at the rear by the time they arrived.

Despite the fire crew working for half an hour to extinguish the fire, the car was destroyed in what Mr Reardon said were suspicious circumstances.

Police have told The Daily Examiner it hadn't been reported stolen, but noted they were still at an early stage of the investigation.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to phone Grafton police on 6642 0222 or Crimes Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
