Helen set to race to the track

WHEN you are married to a local racehorse trainer, you can expect to be asked for a few winning tips during the 2012 XXXX Gold July Racing Carnival.

And while Helen Commerford isn't giving anything away, you can bet she will have plenty of inside information at the ready before the barriers fly open.

The passionate racing enthusiast will be trackside throughout the five-day carnival, scrutinising the form and hopefully spending a bit of time in the winners' circle should husband Terry Commerford boot home a victor.

"There is no other racing event like the July Carnival," Helen said.

"I've been involved with racing most of my life and I love going to the races.

"The Westlawn Finance Grafton Cup Prelude is a great day for the whole family to enjoy, especially for the kids and elderly patrons who don't like the large crowds at the Ramornie and Cup."

Helen is encouraging racegoers to dress traditionally in black and gold colours today for the race meeting, locally known as Black and Gold Day.

"Everyone, get dressed up in your best gold and black fashions and come have a great day at the races," she said.

Gates open at 11am, admission is free.
