How a conversation can save a life
IT'S DonateLife Week, our national awareness week to promote organ and tissue donation.
This week is the time to have a conversation with your family about your wishes because in Australia the family is always asked to confirm the donation wishes of the deceased.
In an effort to encourage these conversations on Thursday the Mid North Coast Local Health District will be hosting a stall at the Coffs Harbour Farmers Market between 8am and 3pm.
Specialist nurse Anne Judd will be there to talk to people about making this difficult decision.
"Some Australians still find it hard to bring up the subject of organ and tissue donation with their family," Ms Judd said.
"Deciding to have that discussion this week, DonateLife Week, can help normalise the subject.
"While many families think they know the wishes of their family members, it turns out that only 57% of Australians know for certain."
"During this national awareness week having the conversation with family and friends about organ donation helps to prepare you should you ever be asked to confirm a loved one's wishes - it's a conversation that could one day save lives."
