JASON Tomkins spent 11 days camping outside the Bundy Rum Bondstore.

And the wait paid off on Saturday, when he became the first person to lay his hands on the Bundaberg Distilling Company's latest special editions release, the Bundaberg Original Select Vat Rum.

"I turned up on (June 13) and I camped there the whole time," Mr Tomkins said.

"I've done it a few times.

"Last year I camped out for three weeks."

Mr Tomkins said the long wait to be first in line was well worth it.

"I definitely won't be drinking it," he said.

"I've been collecting for about two years."

Mr Tomkins said the rum release events were always plenty of fun.

"The spirit was really good as it always is," he said.

"It's good to catch up with friends that you only see at the launches."

Mr Tomkins, who arrived on a Wednesday, said it was several nights before anyone else arrived.

"It was Sunday morning before the others turned up," he said.

Hundreds of people gathered for the launch of the four-year-old rum.

Bundaberg Distilling Company Bondstore manager Haydn Jobson said the unveiling was exciting for the distillery.

"Utilising the Distillery's 120 years of rum making expertise, our master craftsman searched through two-year-old original rum reserves and hand selected those that exhibited the right qualities and characteristics," he said.

"These premium rum reserves were then double aged for a total of four years in oak vats to produce this product."

The aviation-themed launch attracted people from near and far with plenty of people getting geared up in their best pilot outfits for the day.

Every bottle bears the vat number 207 from which this rum comes.

The first 5000 bottles are individually numbered and the product will still be for sale this week at the Bondstore.
