MEXICO has pulled off a major upset by beating football powerhouse Brazil 2-1 in the men's final at the London Olympics.

Overage striker Oribe Peralta was the hero for the Mexicans, scoring a brace and helping keep out the Brazilians until right at the death of the match.

Mexico was quick out of the gates, stunning their heavily favoured opponents with a goal in the first minute.

The match stayed locked at 1-0 for another 74 minutes before Peralta added his, and his side's, second goal of the match.

It took until added time at the end of the match before Brazil troubled the scoresheet, substitute Hulk grabbing a mere consolation.

South Korea won the bronze medal after defeating continental rival Japan 2-0.
