Miami nice for talented designers

TWO Byron Bay fashion labels have made a splash at one of the largest fashion trade shows in the Northern Hemisphere - Miami Swim Fashion Week.

Swimwear designer Lisa Burke from the Lisa Blue label became the first Australian to open the event last week with a catwalk presentation covering six different themes at The Raleigh's Cabana Grande.

"Miami Fashion Week is the mecca for 'swim' in the world and to be the first Australian brand to launch was a great privilege," Ms Burke said.

"It represents how strong the brand is regarded in the US. It's a very exciting time for us."

Ms Burke's The Call Of The Whale Collection for summer 2013 opened with the Enchantress Story featuring white monokinis with gold trimmings.

Karina Smirnoff from the American series of Dancing with the Stars then picked up the pace as she danced on the catwalk in a flamenco-inspired piece.

It was followed by models in cowboy boots, denim-printed swimsuits with injections of red and lace.

A pin-up theme followed with 50s-looking cheeky girl prints and fresh blueand white nautical stripes, with fuller-coverage bikini bottoms.

The show closer featured a display by martial artists in celebration of the Year of the Dragon as well as models parading in elaborate headpieces resembling the water dragon.

Co-founders of the two-year-old The Muther of All Things label, Marisa Sidoti and Joceline Godfrey, have a booth at the trade show and have also been staging private showings for major retail and online buyers.

It has already paid off, with sales and more expected post-event, label spokesman Ben Asseraf said.

There had been a really strong response to the label's aesthetics which targeted "a more sophisticated, edgier clientele" than many of the other designs on display, Mr Asseraf said.

In 2011, the label was crowned Designer of The Year at Voyeur Byron's Fashion Expose.

Voyeur Byron's Fashion Expose, now in its fourth year, is on again over two days on October 5 and 6 at the Byron Community Centre.

Sponsored by Common Ground and Fuz Hair, 12 designers will show off their labels.

Voyeur committee member Amanda Gorr said the second day of the show would be open to the public and to other designers who weren't involved in the main show.

"There are just so many wonderful designers on the Northern Rivers," she said.

"Voyeur will showcase everything from swimwear to lingerie, evening and day wear and of course there will be dozens of gorgeous models strutting down the runway."
