Moment of truth for our 1500m hope

FORMER Sunshine Coaster Jarrod Poort will be intent on making the most of his late call-up to the Australian Olympic team when he contests the 1500m freestyle in London tonight.

The 17-year-old (pictured) narrowly missed out on an automatic qualifying time when he won at the Olympic trials in March with an 11-second personal-best time of 15:13.38.

He attempted to make the A-qualifying time again after an intense training camp at altitude, but failed again.

He was handed a lifeline, however, in the form of a discretionary invitation to the Games from the world swimming body, FINA, last month - a decision that ensured Australian would maintain its proud tradition of contesting the event.

Having discovered his passion for swimming at Buderim, Poort now lives and trains at Wollongong under dual Olympian Ron McKeon.

He has been pitched into the same heat as world-record holder Sun Yang, of China.

Poort will take to the blocks at 7.24pm.

The final will be contested at 4.36am on Sunday.
