THE owner of an Irish tabloid newspaper has moved to close the paper down after it published topless photos of Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton.

Photos of the Duchess sunbaking topless were first published in a French magazine, and were then re-published last week in the domestic edition of the Irish Daily Star.

The Independent reported on Sunday that the paper's owner - British businessman Richard Desmond - announced he planned to shut the publication down.

A spokesman for the Duchess and Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, told the Independent the couple planned to sue the French publication which originally printed the photographs.

Mr Desmond's business partners in the Irish Daily Star Independent News and Media, also hold a stake in APN News and Media, which owns this publication.
