AMNESTY International has criticised Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull following his announcement at the Obama Summit in New York that Australia's annual humanitarian intake would remain at 18,750 on an ongoing basis.

Amnesty International Australia refugee campaigner Ming Yu Hah said: "Let's be clear about this, very little of what the Australian Government has announced is new ... the Australian Government has shirked its fair share of responsibility at a time of record global displacement.” Ms Ming Yu also took aim at Australia's offshore detention regime.

"What Prime Minister Turnbull failed to explain at the summit is that the Australian Government's current approach to border protection depends on the intentional abuse of thousands of men, women and children,” she said.
