UPDATED, 3.18PM:

AUSSIE Airline Qantas has announced it will return to the Gold Coast Airport.

Airline CEO Alan Joyce, Qantas domestic CEO, Tourism Minister Jann Stuckey, Queensland Premier Campbell Newman and Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate were on hand for the announcement at 3pm.

The airline confirmed it would introduce three daily flights from the Gold Coast to Sydney.

 

INITIAL REPORT: 

QANTAS is making a major announcement at the Gold Coast Airport at 3pm today.

The airline's chief executive officer Alan Joyce and Qantas Domestic chief executive officer Lyell Strambi will be at the airport to make the announcement.

It's believed Premier Campbell Newman and Tourism Minister Jann Stuckey will also be on hand.

Details of the announcement are not yet known, however the airline has not operated from the airport in recent years and had instead left its budget carrier Jetstar in place.
