Shark keeps fishermen on their toes

SPENDING 90 minutes with a 10-foot white pointer circling their 16-foot tinny was a bit more than a couple of local anglers could stand.

The pair, who don't want to be identified, were fishing about 2km off Wooli last week when they noticed their unwelcome visitor.

"I was looking down, when I saw this thing in the water about 20cm from the boat," one of the anglers recalled.

"I thought 'dolphin' then I looked again and realised it wasn't," he said.

For more than an hour the shark kept them company, disappearing for up to 10 minutes, then reappearing suddenly and approaching within centimetres of their boat.

"After about an hour and a half, we'd had enough and went back in," he said.

"I don't know what he was doing. We were dropping bits of bait in the water and he wasn't touching any of it.

"But neither of us was prepared to stand up."

The fisherman said he didn't believe they were in real danger, but he said it was important for people to realise there were big sharks out there off the Clarence Coast.
