INTERNATIONAL agribusiness supplier Landmark has bought out South Grafton's Shiralee Produce and the company has not ruled out further expansion into other facets of Landmark's core business including real estate, finance, insurance and stock agency.

Landmark is a part of the US-based Agrium corporation which develops nutritional and agricultural chemicals for distribution through its retail arms.

The company has acquired seven stores in Northern NSW since January including the Harwood Produce Store and others in Alstonville and Lismore. They add to more than 400 Landmark outlets.

The Harwood and South Grafton stores will be managed by former Harwood Produce Store manager, Phil Nelson.

Shiralee was established by Trevor Townsend 14 years ago and was taken over by Allan Morgan in 2000. Mr Morgan, who will stay on as merchandise manager in South Grafton, said the outlet's staff of three full time and one part time workers would remain in place.

He said the business cut back one staff member a few months ago as a business decision.

Landmark's north east regional director Robert Payne said the company was looking to integrate Shiralee into its ranks with a smooth transition.

"We bring international and national strength to a local store," he said. "We bring exclusive technology and exclusive products to the Australian market.

Mr Payne said Landmark looked for good local ownership before it even considered acquiring a business and built on the existing management and clientele.

Asked if Landmark be looking to buy local stock and station agents, Mr Payne said he didn't know of anything specifically.

"But we're always looking to expand our footprint," he said.
