THREE students from Byron Bay High School have been awarded the prestigious Sports Recognition award for 2012.

The students, swimmer Lorne Greenlaw, surfer Kirsten Ogden and runner Marlie Campton, will receive their awards at a special lunch for all North Coast recipients in Ballina on December 3.

The awards are given to students who have achieved outstanding results at state championships and represented the North Coast on at least three occasions with distinction.

Lorne has competed ay regional, state and national championships and according to Byron Bay High School sports organiser Kelley Caoyonan, he is a self-motivated athlete who has the "eye of the tiger" in competition.

"Lorne shows true sportsmanship in and out of the pool and has represented the school from 2009 to 2012," she said.

He has made the NSW CHS championships every year and has medalled at every meet.

Ms Caoyonan said Kirsten was a "quiet achiever" who was a talented surfer and self-motivated in her quest to achieve her goals.

Kirsten has represented the school from 2009 to 2012 and in 2010 she won the female solo event was part of the NSW team which went on to win.

"She is a great role model for younger girls trying to achieve similar goals in an often male-dominated sport," Ms Caoyonan said.

"Marlie is a competitive athlete and her early results indicate that she is someone who will rise to the very top of her sport.

"A gifted and talented runner she has achieved national standards at a very young age."

Marlie has smashed all records held for 12-14 years girls in the 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m on the North Coast and she is the 2011/2012 state champion for both the 800m and 1500m events.

Ms Caoyonan said that when Marlie was on the running track she came alive and trained and competed with intensity.
