WHEN an Instagram picture of Australian actor Chris Hemsworth showing off his massive bicep went viral this week, some people in the Clarence Valley thought the background looked quite familiar.

And for good reason; the picture was taken at Iluka's Sedgers Reef Hotel.

Licensee Rowena Drew said she was still getting phone calls and messages from people who were upset they had missed a chance to get up close to the celebrity, who stopped in at the local pub for lunch with his brother Luke and two friends on Monday.

The photo, posted by Luke with the caption "Hey, do you even lift bro?" shows the actor has undergone a dramatic transformation since he lost 15kg while filming In The Heart Of The Sea, based on a real event which inspired the novel Moby Dick.

"There were another three guys there with him and they could have been famous but I couldn't tell you who they were," Ms Drew laughed.

"They came in for lunch, had a few coldies and off they went.

"I'm too old to get star-struck but there were a lot of other people here that definitely were."

Ms Drew said she wouldn't let anyone take photos of them while they were at the pub so they didn't feel uncomfortable being there, but welcomed the fact Luke Hemsworth posted the picture on the social media platform.

"That afternoon they posted it apparently and that's when everyone got really excited and couldn't believe they missed it - people who were working two doors up or were out and about," she said.

While Iluka is no stranger to celebrities using its beaches and small township for low key getaways, Ms Drew said Chris Hemsworth was definitely one of the more famous personalities to stop in for a beer.

"I know we've had a rap singer and some people off X Factor, but I don't think you can get much better than those boys at the moment," she said.

"It's a bit of excitement for the town."
