Top musician supports kids

AS one of Australia's best-loved singers, there's a lot we already know about Pete Murray.

He's renowned for his acoustic tunes and hits include Always A Winner and So Beautiful.

He's a keen surfer who calls the North Coast home and "wouldn't dream" of living anywhere else.

Murray is also the proud father of Charlie, 8, and Pedro, 5.

But what you probably don't know is that before his music career took off, Murray worked with disadvantaged kids in Melbourne.

"We worked with kids who couldn't live at home because of abuse or maybe their parents had drug or alcohol problems," he said.

"It was tough ... I'd never experienced anything like that before.

"As a parent, it just makes you realise that kids are the future."

That's one of the reasons why Murray has thrown his support behind the Northern Rivers Community Foundation, and will give his time to perform at their annual music fundraiser.

"It's a great foundation and I wanted to do the concert last year but I couldn't," he said.

"But I'm not touring at the moment. I'm thinking about an Australian solo tour next year, and possibly working on an acoustic version of the new album (Blue Sky Blue)."

Murray will be supported by Scarlett Affection at the Bangalow Bowling Club on Sunday, August 19 from noon. The cost is $120 and includes a sit-down meal and show.

"Pete is such a brilliant musician, a local guy, a dad and deeply connected to his community ... we couldn't think of anyone better for the show," said foundation chairwoman, Lucy Ashley.

A portion of funds raised on the day will go to the NRCF Tony Narracott sub-fund to support local disadvantaged children and teens.

Tickets for the Pete Murray concert are only available online through Oztix.

FAST FACTS

  • Murray's latest album Blue Sky Blue was recorded at LA studio Sunset Sound.
  • He took a three-year break before recording it to focus on himself and his children.
  • Pete says the album is "different and fresh", and a big change from his other work.
