Website unlocks world of wonder

Despite retiring from teaching, Rockhampton man David Black can’t escape his love of literacy and has created a website to help others learn more.

DAVID Black wishes he had spent more time in prison than in school - teaching that is.

The Rockhampton man spent 18 years teaching English at The Range Convent and Emmaus College, and 15 years teaching at the jail.

But it was during his time teaching inmates that he was inspired to create Reading for Wizards, a subscription website to help people of all ages learn more about literacy and general knowledge.

"One of the inmates suggested I write a story for him," Mr Black said.

"I ended up writing 130 stories.

"I checked and it's actually bigger than War and Peace.

"It's taken on a life of its own."

Mr Black explained throughout the stories he added numerous questions about literacy, prompting the inmate to label him a workaholic.

It is the basis for the system Mr Black had created for his weekly "packages" for Reading for Wizards.

He said he had created enough instalments to last students two years.

The packages are based on general knowledge stories with various literacy questions.

"I'm aiming at an overseas market, particularly India," Mr Black said.

"But my first port of call is here, in Rockhampton.

"The cost is $11 for one month."

The lover of the English language vehemently believes there should be separate classes for English and literacy.

"Literacy is a discipline," Mr Black said.
