Whales turn on the fun
CURRIMUNDI spanner crabber Richard Freeman was in awe earlier this week when a pod of "seven or eight" humpback whales approached and started breaching playfully around his boat for almost half an hour.
"They were on both sides of me, sometimes they came real close. I felt one bump the boat actually," Mr Freeman said. "I thought, gee whiz, that whale has given me a bit of a nudge."
Mr Freeman was alone and had just pulled in his last crab line and was getting ready to head back to port when he was chosen to witness the inspiring natural spectacle.
The display became even more exhilarating for the amateur photographer, when the whales were joined by a school of dolphins and a handful of sharks.
The light was perfect under the setting sun, so he pulled out his camera and snapped some amazing shots.
"This one kept breaching over and over again, so I was able to get half a dozen breach shots, which are hard to get," a humbled Mr Freeman said.
He left for home a happy man.
