UPDATE 1:25pm: Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction of a newborn baby from a Taree hospital on Thursday.

The child and the 26-year-old mother were located in Coffs Harbour at around 9.30am Friday following information received from the public.

After attending the scene, police escorted the woman and infant to Coffs Harbour Base Hospital for observation but they did not appear to have any serious medical issues.

"Officers are still looking at the evidence but at this stage, no charges have been laid," a police media spokesperson said.

"That is not to say there may not be further action but it's unlikely anything will happen before Monday at the earliest."

Woman found

A WOMAN who became the subject of a police search after 'abducting' her one-day-old  baby from Kempsey Hospital has been found at Coffs Harbour.

Police said the woman, 26, was found about 9.30pm last night after officers at Coffs received a tip-off from a member of the public.

Police had called on North Coast residents to keep an eye out for the woman and her baby after she took the child from the hospital's special care nursery and left the hospital.

There had been concern for the baby's health, with police saying the child had not been cleared for release by specialists.

Police said the woman and her baby had been taken to Coffs Harbour hospital for observation and appeared to be showing no ill effects from their time on the run.

There was no comment made about possible charges relating to the search.

Police thanked the community for their help finding the pair.
