LOVE TAKES FLIGHT: Nathan Lipscombe proposed to his girlfriend Vanessa Durham in unique style.

LOVE is in the air. It was flying at low altitude last Sunday when Nathan Lipscombe proposed to his unsuspecting girlfriend from a four-seater Cessna with the aid of a sign on the beach below.

After a year globetrotting together, Nathan Lipscombe and Vanessa Durham have come back to family and friends in the Clarence, obviously with the spirit of adventure still running through their veins.

“I wanted to do something creative and I'd been talking about getting up and getting a bird's eye view of the Valley after the floods,” Nathan said.

“So I knew I wouldn't have any trouble getting Vanessa into the plane,” Nathan said.

It was an idea that took about six weeks of planning and was finally realised last Sunday over Iluka.

“I had to wait till the weather was right, the tide was low and I'd stockpiled all the driftwood from the floods,” Nathan said.

A friend had told Nathan about a pilot at Palmers Island that he could employ for the proposal and he set the date.

“About five friends all went down and wrote the message on the sand, they were all pretty eager to help.”

After taking off from Palmers Island, the soon-to-be-engaged couple flew towards Shark Bay and then turned and flew along the beaches. The pilot dropped to the lowest possible flight altitude of 500ft and Nathan told his girlfriend to look down.

“She was lost for words and it was loud in the plane but she definitely said yes,” he said.

After touching down they popped the cork on a bottle of champagne.
