AUBREY Gillespie, of Tenterfield, was only in town for a couple of days during race week, but boy did he get noticed.

Aub came runner-up in the Best Dressed Gent fashions on the field event on cup day, placed a few bets and charmed his way through it all

“I love the July Carnival. I have come back every year since I was 19 and I turn 89 in a month or so,” he said.

This Maclean born ex-butcher loves to come to where it all began.

“I love this whole area. The Clarence is such a beautiful place to be,” he said.

Having hung his butchers cleaver up for the last time at the end of a 45-year career, Aub has been forced to find other ways to pass the time.

“I love gardening,” Aub said. “I grow all types of vegetables but my specialties are tomatoes, potatoes and pumpkins.”

Aside from gardening, Aub is also heavily involved in the Tenterfield Rugby League Club and the Oracles of the Bush.
