LIKEABLE larrikin and ex-Graftonian Adam Eckersley is moving forward in the Australian Idol competition in leaps and bounds.
Adam grew up in Grafton and went to high school at Catherine McAuley College. He then got an apprenticeship with Doug Clark Toyota and stayed in Grafton until he was 20.
“I still love Grafton, it was a pretty good place to grow up,” Adam said.
“Most of my family on my mum's side still live up there and it is a great place to visit. Got to get up there to see my grandma every now and then.”
It seems that he just can't get the Jacaranda city out of his system as he recently proposed to another ex-Graftonian - Brooke McClymont of The McClymonts.
“We have been together for about 18 months and got engaged earlier this year. The plan at the moment is to get married in late October on my parent's farm in Tamworth,” he said.
While Adam's talents were always known to his friends and family, the entire country has come to appreciate his unique blues/rock sound.
“Wherever I can in the competition, I would like to sing that old rock and roll style. The competition plays heavily on versatility though and I am looking forward to the challenge. My plan is to just be myself and I'm a dirty rock singer,” he said.
“Ultimately I would like to be the 2009 Australian Idol. It acts as a great springboard into the industry and it all depends on what you do with the opportunity once it is in your hands.”
Adam has made it well-known that his two-year-old son was the main motivation for entering the competition.
“Your outlook on life changes when you have a kid. It wasn't just about me anymore, it was about little Harry and his mum,” he said.
“I was living week to week and wasn't too stable financially and I decided it was time to change. I want to be a decent roll model for him and be someone he looks up to.
“The competition isn't really about the fame or millions of dollars for me. It is about being stable for Harry.”
You can catch Adam in the Australian Idol semifinals from 7.30pm tonight on Channel 10.
