SO this is supposed to be winter?

At 2.30pm yesterday the temperature at the Grafton airport was 36.1 degrees Celsius. It was even hotter in town.

The previous highest August temperature at the site since recording started in 1992 was 30.8 degrees.

Before yesterday, the highest official temperature recorded in Grafton was taken at the Grafton pool site on August 22, 1995, when the temperature reached 34.5 degrees.

Yesterday it climbed from a minimum of 17.9 degrees to 36.3. The weather recorder said her computer kept prompting her 'are you sure' as she typed in the reading.

In Yamba, records have been kept since 1887. Until now the highest August temperature was 30.7 degrees, but that was easily eclipsed yesterday at 2pm when the mercury soared to 35.3 degrees.

Despite the record temperatures, the Clarence Valley couldn't claim to have been the hottest on the North Coast yesterday.

That dubious honour went to Evans Head, which recorded a maximum temperature of 37.4 degrees at 2pm.

But relief is in sight.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts Grafton will reach a maximum of 31 degrees today before cooling further towards the end of the week.
