Best banner goes to St Mary's

AS hundreds of Jacaranda Festival-goers looked on, St Mary's was named winner in The Daily Examiner Parade of Youth banner competition.

St Mary's took out the top spot in the The Daily Examiner Parade of Youth banner competition. Pictured is The Cathedral School's entry in the competition.

PRIMARY school students from all over the Clarence Valley marched through the centre of Grafton on Saturday displaying spectacular banners - the combined efforts of hundreds of kids and countless hours of school time.

The theme for this year's Parade of Youth - Memories of an early Jacaranda - engaged students in the history of Australia's oldest floral festival and produced banners of all shapes, sizes and colours.

But purple, or course, was predominant.

First prize was awarded to St Mary's Primary School, followed by Nymboida Public School in second place and South Grafton Public School in third.

Judges commented on the high standard of all entries.

Jacaranda Festival manager Libby Pigg reminded all Grafton performers that the Jaca's Got Talent quest is to be held this year from 10.30am to noon at Market Square on Jacaranda Thursday.

Prizes of $100 will be awarded in three age categories and the Purple Faces Trophy comes with an additional $100 cash for the overall winner.

Libby asked for entries to be presented to her at the festival van in Market Square by 3pm Tuesday.

The van is open for inquiries all week from 9am to 3pm.
