SUMMER kicks off today with ominous overtones following a record-breaking November weather wise.

Meteorologist Samuel Terry, from the Weather Company, reports that Byron Bay, Casino, Ballina and Evans Head scored their hottest November on record, while Lismore received its hottest November day.

“We’re experiencing extreme heat conditions right across the country with the return of El Nino,” he said.

“This indicates we can expect a dry, hot summer with more extreme weather events ahead.”

Figures released by the Weather Company show the average maximum temperature for November for most towns across the region was three degrees above normal readings.

Casino registered an average maximum temperature of 32 degrees, with two days above 40 degrees. Evans Head and Ballina clocked up an average maximum of 29 degrees, with hottest days of 39 and 38 respectively, and Lismore registered 39 degrees on Sunday.

Mr Terry warned the record books were probably in for another battering over summer.

“We can expect above average temperatures and below average rainfall this summer,” he said.
