Liam, a lucky one, digs deep

Liam Fluyters will go under the clippers tomorrow night at the Yamba Bowling Club.

LIAM Fluyters knows all too well what it means to sit in medical waiting rooms and then be told very unfortunate news.

The young man has had three years of treatment for lymphoma and then for leukaemia, and considers himself one of the lucky ones.

“It has been 11 years now since I went through it, so now I do as much as I can,” Liam said yesterday.

This year ‘doing as much as he can’ has involved rounding up about a dozen people who will have their heads shaved to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation.

The event will go ahead at the Yamba Bowling Club tomorrow night, from 8 o’clock through to 11.30pm.

Liam has also tried to make a night out of the event by organising a band, raffles and preparing a skit to perform.

“I have got The Gap to perform and we will be doing a few funny things on the night,” he said.

“It is a really family-friendly event and there is no age limits, so anyone and everyone can come along and join in,” Liam said.

“I have a fair few people who have committed to shaving their heads, which is great.

“I am thinking that a few people will get caught up on the night though and spontaneously decide to do it as well.”

If you want to be involved, but aren’t willing to face the clippers just yet, you can colour your hair on the night in the name of fundraising.

A couple of raffles will also run, with Liam getting his hands on a DVD player, a pamper package and restaurant vouchers as prizes for the winners.

A bucket will be passed around by organisers for gold coin donations towards the cure and treatment of cancer.

Strands become dollars

IF you notice stray strands of hair floating down Prince Street in Grafton this week, be not surprised.

Two hairdressers on Grafton’s main street have their clippers at the ready for two brave women who will shave their heads in the name of the annual Leukaemia Foundation World’s Greatest Shave fundraiser.

First up at 9am today, Tracy Jurkewicz will lose her locks out the front of Karen’s Hair.

“I feel a lot of people don’t know how it feels to lose their hair, so I want to help raise awareness of it,” she said.

Tomorrow at 10am, Woolies deli worker Krystal Lesslie, 21, will say goodbye to her shoulder-length hair outside Images Naturally.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” Miss Lesslie said.

Both women are hoping to attract donations from onlookers.

Meanwhile, two McAuley Catholic College students will also line up to be brave and shave today. Year 11 students Lizzie Summerell and Daniel Saunders have raised $1700 for the Leukaemia Foundation.
