AN elderly couple, believed to be in their 70s from Queensland, have been killed in a head-on accident on the Pacific Highway this morning.
It is believed a 17-year-old male, from the North Coast, was behind the wheel of an older model blue Commodore, which had red P-plates on it. A 19-year-old male was also believed to be in the car.
Police said the young driver crossed over into on-coming traffic and collided with the elderly couple's blue Commodore.
The two young men were taken to Lismore Base Hospital by the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter in a serious but stable condition.
The accident happened about 19 kilometres south of New Italy. The highway is expected to be closed for several hours. Local diversions are in place.
