Maclean High School students Alice Batcheldor, Phoebe Zietsch and Sarah King show off their new look after having their heads shaved. Other Maclean High students and staff also participated and the school raised $7000 for cancer research.
A SHAVE for a Cure fundraiser at Maclean set out with a modest aim of raising $500, but ended up with a grand total running into thousands.
Four organisers of Maclean High School’s Shave for a Cure fundraiser approached businesses in Yamba and Maclean, set up a Facebook page and convinced other students and teachers to dig deep and back the cause for the Leukaemia Foundation.
So it was with delight that Alice Batcheldor, Phoebe Zietsch, Annie Groves and Sarah King learned that an estimated $7000 had been raised for the Leukaemia Foundation.
The girls last week were also presented with a $1500 cheque from the Maclean Bowling Club, which hosted its own fundraiser for the girls’ effort.
“I’ve never had short hair before,” Sarah King said after she lost her locks in the shave. “I feel very liberated.”
The girls were shaved on stage in front of the school assembly. Students coloured, teased and wigged their own hair for the occasion. Sarah and Phoebe went that bit further, donating their hair to the Alopecia Foundation.
