Ului and Huey bring perfect swell

THE predicted giant swell didn't eventuate, but the result was even better - a long line swell that delivered a long series of sizeable but rideable waves.

Angourie Point yesterday morning. A mob of surfers, a lucky wave-rider and a ‘long line swell’, which brought perfect wave after perfect wave to the shore.

CYCLONE Ului had surfers charged with excitement on Friday night as talk of an eight-foot swell (which translates to a four-metre front face) spread up and down Australia’s east coast.

Though the predicted size didn’t eventuate, offshore winds along the Clarence Valley coastline and a healthy four-foot swell (2.5 metre face) on Saturday meant surfers with almost any sort of ability were able to make the most of the waves.

Yamba surfing stalwart Jeremy Walters said the result of the ‘friendly’ waves was large crowds vying for action.

“If it was as big as they predicted there would have been half as many people.” Jeremy, who spent most of his Saturday and Sunday in the waves, said the anticipation of a cyclone-driven surf was about as exciting as it got for local surfers.
