THE Grafton Ghosts are a step closer to going through the season undefeated after a less-than-impressive win against Marist Brothers on the weekend.
Northern United and Cudgen share second place on the ladder and along with Ballina, will fight for that all important second and third position on the ladder.
Good news for Ballina is Northern and Cudgen will play each other in next weekend’s final round with the Seagulls playing the bottom-of-the-table Magpies.
Marist Brothers should prove too strong for Casino but will need to rack up plenty of points if they are to dislodge the Rhinos from fifth position.
The Rhinos are likely to struggle against the Ghosts, but as long as they don’t leak too many points, are still in the running with a 40-point better differential than Marist Brothers.
In their last outing against the Ghosts the Rhinos were given a rugby league lesson going down 62-16.
McKittrick Park has been a happy hunting ground for the Ghosts in the past and with the local derby likely to bring out the best in their players and the likely return of Aaron Hartmann and Grant Stevens, Col Speed’s men will be hard to beat.
For Byron their season is over and even the ludicrous decision to overturn the six-week suspension of star centre Clarence Kelly failed to propel them into the final five.
For the Magpies the end of the season cannot come quick enough with only a draw against Mullumbimby in Round 1 their only success this season.
It has been a difficult year for the Magpies who have struggled with player numbers and went through the back end of the season without a reserve grade side.
