Dancing for the disabled

A NEW activity for people with disabilities and their friends is about to be introduced in the Valley.

Wheel dancing: Jasmine Clarke and Ryan Hollier from Dancing Wheelies Inc demonstrate wheelchair dancing.

A NEW activity for people with disabilities and their friends is about to be introduced in the Valley.

From next month, the Maclean Lions Club will host a disco for people with disabilities, to be held every two months and alternating between Grafton, Maclean and Yamba.

The Department of Sport and Recreation has supported the disco with a $10,000 grant.

The first event will be a workshop with the Dancing Wheelies Inc on September 2, the day of the first disco, to train instructors who will be paid to lead the dance on the Thursday night.

Spokesman Robyn Ravenna said wheelchair dancing was a great recreational pursuit for people of all ages who needed a wheelchair for mobility.

“It is also suitable for walking frame users,” she said.

Wheelchair dancing can be competitive or social.

It improves wheelchair skills and physical fitness, and encourages socialisation which leads to improved self-esteem. It is also a lot of fun.

The first event will be at the Raymond Laurie Sports Centre, Yamba, from 6pm on September 2. Entry is $10.

Transport is free around the Valley; call 0422 867 900.
