THE Rhinos scraped into the semi-finals by the narrowest of margins and at Kingscliff tonight they have a chance to prove the critics wrong and confirm themselves as genuine title contenders.
But standing in their way is a Cudgen side seeking revenge from their 44-14 drubbing at the hands of the Rhinos in round 8 of the NRRRL competition.
The Rhinos were on fire against the Hornets that day, winning the battle up-front and then running rampant in the backs.
Cudgen coach Con Theodossiou said he expects tonight’s elimination semi-final to be a much closer affair on the Hornets home ground.
“Last time we played they were far too strong and we will have to be at our best if we’re going to keep our season alive,” he said.
“Their centre was a handful last time but in saying that we won’t be focusing too much on one player.
“The Rhinos are a good side and have match-winners right across the park. Xavier (Sullivan) can pop a pass and Steve Kirby is always a handful.
“We won’t be taking them lightly and we have plenty of respect for the Rhinos.”
Cudgen has proved hard to beat on home soil this season and Rhinos coach Xavier Sullivan admits it will be a tough assignment for his inexperienced side.
“Only three of us have tasted finals footy, so the young guys will have to harness that energy and produce their best on the paddock,” Sullivan said.
“We need to control the ruck for the first 15-20 minutes so defence is going to be the key on the night.”
Sullivan said he is also aware of Theodossiou’s ability to lift his side for the big matches.
“Con is a very smart coach and he knows every trick in book. He will definitely have his side primed for the match.”
The Grafton Ghosts will feature in the reserve grade game prior to the Rhinos v Cudgen clash and will also be up against the Hornets who they had a 12-all draw with earlier in the season.
