Angela Van den Boom (centre), acting branch manager of NORTEC Employment and Training in Yamba, is doing Movember with workmates Melinda (left) and Alix.
JUST hang on a minute, who said only blokes can do Movember?
Sure, most women have trouble growing a moustache, but many women are keen to support an important initiative that raises awareness about men’s health.
That’s certainly the case with the ladies from Nortec Employment and Training in Yamba and, in fact, all their offices in the Clarence Valley.
Acting branch manager of Nortec in Yamba, Angela Van den Boom, has been actively supporting Movember for the past four years.
“Nortec has got behind Movember because it’s a good community service and important for men’s health,” she said.
“I go out and canvas local businesses to support us and everyone’s pretty good at getting behind it because they all know it’s a good cause.”
Angela likes to have a bit of fun with Movember and sometimes wears her fake moustache. Last year, the company even produced a 2010 calendar, which included photos of staff members and their moustaches.
But Angela said she also appreciated the serious side of the initiative, having had family members suffer with related men’s health issues.
As for women who may not like their men to have a hairy upper lip, she had the following advice for her ‘mo sisters’.
“Put up with the ugly mo for a month, girls, because it’s all for a good cause,” she said.
Movember is a men’s health initiative which has fast become a worldwide phenomenon.
In its first year, just 30 ‘mo bros’ took part in Movember. Last year, in Australia alone, almost 130,000 people got on board and raised more than $21 million.
Anyone wanting to support mo bros and mo sisters can go to the official Movember website, movember.com.
If you would like to show your support to Angela and the Nortec team, go to the Movember website and click ‘donate’, then ‘to a team’, then type ‘Nortec’.
