Environment groups say forests are being “mismanaged”.
ENVIRONMENT groups are protesting in Grafton today, World Forest Day, to highlight what they consider the gross mismanagement of the region's old-growth forests and koala habitats.
“The problems with our state and private forestry go much deeper than mismanagement, it is quite dysfunctional,” said John Jeayes, honorary secretary of the North Coast Environment Council.
The environment council and the North East Forest Alliance will hold a protest outside the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water offices at Grafton at 11.30am.
More than 30 people are expected to attend.
The environment council is calling on the government to revoke all “old growth” reassessments, which Mr Jeayes said had led to the release of more than 8000 hectares through incorrect declassification.
“It is also important they cease all logging in core koala habitats,” he said.
