Criticism of road signage disputed

Tags: complaints, pacific highway, road signage

COMPLAINTS from motorists about misleading flood-related signage on the Pacific Hwy last week have been dismissed by Roads and Maritime Services as incorrect.

A letter in yesterday's Examiner stated a guest at a Yamba wedding was made hours late on Saturday because of incorrect detour signage at Ballina indicating the highway was closed and traffic had to be diverted through Casino and Grafton.

The letter also complained about misinformation for northbound motorists at Grafton.

RMS said yesterday the highway was closed just north of Grafton due to flooding on January 26 and remained closed until 10am January 30.

"During this time the Pacific Hwy between Ballina and north of Grafton remained open," a spokesperson said.

"Electronic message signs to alert motorists to closures and detour options were in place last weekend and updated regularly. Traffic controllers were at various points to provide extra direction to motorists being detoured due to flood risks.

"Motorists who disobey detour signs take a serious safety risk by driving on flooded roads.

"Motorists are advised to plan their journey, allow extra travel time, and obey all signs during times of flooding.

"Motorists can contact the Transport Management Centre on 132 701 or visit www.livetraffic.com to view closures and detours on all state roads."
