Jack made it to school by boat

Tags: boat, floodwaters, school

THE first day of big school is never easily forgotten by parents, however, Jack Pigg may remember his journey a little better than his classmates.

The four-year-old and his parents Craig and Michelle were faced with having him miss his very first day of Kindergarten as floodwaters surrounded their Collets Island home this week.

So Jack hopped in his dad's boat in his school uniform and headed for Ulmarra Public School on Wednesday.

"Where we are, we will be cut off for at least another six days, and I really didn't want him to miss that first bit of school," Michelle said.

When faced with the prospect of not being at school with all the other kids, Jack didn't seem to be fazed at all.

"He has been really excited for a long time, but when I said to him that he might not be able to start, all he said was 'That's okay Mum. I'll start another day'," Michelle said.

The Piggs have lived at Colletts Island for about 10 years so are used to being cut off when the river begins to rise. They also have family closer to town, where Jack is staying until he can get home.

"He's at Grandma's but he will be back out here for the weekend," Michelle said.
